Barack in the (Power)Hizzouse
My girlfriend and I were coming back from the grocery store yesterday at around 10 pm and saw quite a frenzy of cop cars and people on where Clinton, Milwaukee and Fulton streets intersect (we live about a quarter block form there). We asked someone what was going on and she said that Barack Obama was having a fundraiser at the Powerhouse restaurant, that her friend works in there, and that he should be finishing up soon. Cool!
We waited for a little while, wondering if he’d just make a quick exit or come and shake our hands. I secretly hoped he would come over and sign our box of Oh’s cereal (’Oh’ for Obama, purely a coincidence that we had just purchased these) and also that he would think it was as funny as I did.
Finally, after about fifteen minutes or so of waiting, something started to happen, the policeman started to mobilize, cars were started and out came Barack from the side entrance on Milwaukee into the protective custody of what looked like several Secret Service guys, milled about for a while talking, then stepped some monstrosity of an SUV. With the lights in the background, I didn’t have a great view, and wasn’t able to snap any good photos with my cameraphone. He did however, drive by us on his way out and we could clearly see him waving from the back seat of the SUV. Cool!
We’re lucky to have been there at the right time. I heard that people had been waiting out since 5 pm, when he stealthily used to back door to get in to the restaurant.
Here’s a link to an article quoting the $28,500 per place cost of the dinner. On the menu that night:
Seasoned Tidbits of Change and Grilled Asparagus wrapped in Prosciutto
Entree of Organic Burger Sliders with Savory Hope Sauce
And for dessert, Yes Pecan Pie
