GMaps Pedometer: Great (free) tool for tracking runs
I’ve been using a great site called Gmaps Pedometer in order to track the distance of my runs. It’s built on the Google Maps API so it will work anywhere you can run … or swim (not accounting for island-, pirate-, shark-, garbage patch-, or current-related diversions, it’s approximately 3262.9843 miles from Montauk to Lisbon!).
It’s got a great feature that generates a permalink to your route (sample run here) so you can refer back to it later. The interface (screenshot shown here) is fairly simple and easy to use. One feature that I think would be a great addition would be the ability to maintain a profile on the site, which can be used to see all your runs over time. Though I guess you can do this exporting the waypoints to a standardized format like GPX, and then importing them into a Google account, and using the “My Maps” feature to create a “My Runs” map. Or, you could just drop some bills and pick up a hardware solution, like a Nike Plus or Polar system.
Thanks for the excellent site!

Hi Rob – neat idea. Google Earth is such an incredible tool, isn’t it!?! I think you’d also be able to use the GMaps Pedometer tool to output .GPX format, then you could import this into Google Earth or maybe programatically, into Google Maps. B.t.w. it seems that Google Maps now has a feature for ‘walking directions.’ Will be cool to see how this evolves / is appropriated / mashed up, etc.
